The Why and How of Open Education: Concepts and Practices

This workshop is dedicated to the higher-level field of Open Education (OE), featuring interactive sessions to gather, review and define OE concepts and practices. The organizing committee is now seeking highly motivated, critical and active participants to help define suitable concepts, while contributing their own experiences and lessons learnt. The workshop is open to all OKCon attendees; no further registration is required.

Workshop Agenda

14.00 to 14.30 – Introduction to Open Education The session begins with a 10 minute introduction to the OE field, followed by a 20 minute ‘post-it’ session to identify the core components of OE.

14.30 to 16.00 – ‘The Why and How of Open Education’ – Post-it session to identify suitable concepts Why engage in OE, and how to provide it? These are the core questions of the second session, which begins with a brief introduction followed by a post-it round where participants are asked to provide reasons and means for providing OE, either as a standalone offer or embedded within a traditional/formal education context. By the end of the session we aim to match the why’s and the how’s, and to clarify derivative concepts.

16.00 to 16.15 – Break

16.15 to 17.15 – ‘Open Education as a Service’: Lessons from the openED and openSE projects This session is built around sustainability aspects, including financial sustainability. The first 10 minutes provide an introduction to the openED and openSE projects and some of the initial lessons learnt about sustainability. The next 30 minutes follow a paper-card and board-marker approach to identify and cluster sustainability aspects of OE. In the final 20 minutes we aim to put forward a working definition for ‘Open Education as a Service’.

17.15 to 18.00 – Towards an Open Education Definition This final session aims to provide a clear definition for OE, which is often used in the context of Open Educational Resources (OER), for Open Online Courses, or while talking about traditional Open and Distance Learning; but as this workshop demonstrates these are all component parts of the higher-level OE field. Any definition should therefore also consider the lower-level component parts and how those are defined.
