Free Culture Metadata

This workshop will define a metadata framework for a free culture ecosystem.

The Genero project will create a way to interconnect all service providers offering creative works with a free license. It will do this by creating a federated registry containing all works with a free license (PD, GPL, CC etc). The registry will hold not only descriptive metadata, but also reviews and ratings, download links, links to parent works and more. It will support collaborative works, software and different levels of abstraction.

To create such a system one must have a metadata standard with a number of characteristics; It must be accepted by the main free culture organisations, it must be compatible with both existing standards and new types of formats, distribution and production methods. In short – everything we could ever want from a metadata standard.

I propose a workshop to define which existing standards and ontologies are useful as baselines, and where new definitions are required.
